Choosing the right provider for your Fire Extinguisher Servicing

When it comes to choosing a provider for your fire extinguisher servicing, it is important you understand the difference between each company.  Some providers allow you to choose elements for example extinguisher components and the contents of the service contract. Similar to vehicle insurance you can choose a policy to suit your own individual needs and requirements.

The basic level of servicing needs to be carried out once a year. Fire extinguisher servicing should be carried out to British Standard 5306:3:2017 to ensure full compliance. Fire protection service providers should replace a number of components at each service. These components are ‘consumable spares’ they include the tamper tags and O-rings. Whilst other components may also need replacing down to wear and tear, the service provider should advise you on this. The components are major spares and also include discharge hoses and CO2 horns.

5 Year Detailed Service

Every five years, a detailed service should be carried out known as ‘Extended Service’ this is for low-pressure extinguishers. It involves a full discharge and internal examination of your extinguishers. This especially applies to water, AFFF foam and fire extinguishers using dry powder. Sealed Extinguishers don’t need an extended service until they have been in 10-years.

Dry powder fire extinguishers are generally exchanged with a new extinguisher. They are not discharge tested on site due to the mess and contamination risks.

Foam extinguishers cannot be just discharged anywhere either, these are also usually replaced with new models. The FIA Fire Industry Association states that they must not be discharged onto car parks, hard standings, grass, wasteland, streams, rainwater, storm drains or any outdoor site.

CO2 extinguishers, with these fire extinguishers you are legally obligated to have a 10-year pressure test carried out. This involves the removal of them from your premises and the transportation to an authorised test facility.

The following will then be carried out

  • Removal of valve
  • Hydraulic testing of cylinder
  • Shot-blast and repaint of the outer casing
  • Refill and a new valve fitted
