Dry risers are a crucial piece of fire protection equipment, when it comes to buildings above 18 metres. They provide considerable quantities of water, which either can extinguish or prevent the further spread of fire.
Dry risers are a galvanised pipe system, which runs vertically generally in stairwells. They have outlet valves on each floor level and inlets, which are connected at the ground level. This is to allow the fire brigade to connect a hose to it and pump water to the floor, which is on fire.
The pipe work of dry risers has no water contained within it when not in use. It is dry with just air inside.
